Day 3 – Still climbing!
Thursday, March 01, 2007
Today Dorothy hiked for 11 miles. They are in the Alpine Desert Zone. She says the landscape is just beautiful, and they even saw some snowflakes.
Everyone is very, very tired, and they are getting headaches from the altitude. But she said everyone is in good shape.
The highest they traveled today was to 15,100 feet, but they then went back down to 12,960 feet.
Their guides said that if they all got to 15,000 feet, then there was a 100% chance that they would make it to the summit.
Dorothy reported that they are eating very well. They have 3 to 4 meals a day and must drink 3 liters of water every day. Today they had pumpkin soup and pancakes, lasagna, potatoes, green beans and carrots for dinner. For dessert they had pineapples, oranges and hot tea.
Dorothy says they are all getting silly from the altitude, but the views are magnificent. They are having a very good time.
Friday is the big day. They will hike for 8 hours, then sleep. They will get up at 11 pm and climb to the summit at midnight.
