Greetings from the Polar Star. Today we stopped at Goudier Island the site of the world's most southerly Post Office and the first British base in Antarctica. It is now a living museum run by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. We were able to send postcards from here to anywhere in the world. I send one to the school and expect the children to receive it in mid. March, long after I return! The island was overflowing with Gentoo penguins and their chicks and we had to be careful where we walked so as not to step on them. One even came over to peck at my boots -they are very curious little creatures.
There were also some whale bones on the island from the early era of Antarctic whaling. The views from the top of the island were breathtaking.
We were unable to make our second planned landing ashore this afternoon because of 40 knot winds and big sea swells. We didn't mind too much as we were happy to watch beautiful icebergs from the observation deck and we even witnessed a leopard seal hunt and catch a lone penguin in the waters below us.
The chef and kitchen staff treated us to a magnificent BBQ on the deck last night and we spent the rest of the evening recapping our trip so far and sharing wonderful photos.
